What exactly does a hypnotherapist do?

What hypnotherapists do’ is one of the top Google searches when it comes to hypnotherapy. So, lets chat about what hypnotherapists do!

Hypnotherapy is a form of psychotherapy (there are more types of therapy than you can poke a stick at – which is why it can feel impossible to find the right one for you.) Hypnotherapy uses relaxation, extreme concentration and attention to achieve a heightened state of consciousness (or mindfulness).

At the beginning of a session, you have a conversation with your therapists to identify desired outcomes and possible barriers that get in the way. Then, you are guided into a trance state (that allows you to access your subconscious) and, in this state, the Hypnotherapist instils the desired positive change in the subconscious.

What Hypnotherapists do is not voodoo at all! All our habitual actions (including the way we think and make decisions) is stored in our subconscious which means we are at the mercy of our habits. It can feel almost impossible to change a habit – ask anyone who has tried to stick to a diet, stop smoking, talk themselves out of a phobia, or not be triggered after experiencing trauma.

The brain is exceptionally clever at storing “processes” into our subconscious so they happen on autopilot, leaving brain capacity to “think.” And it works a treat until you are running unhelpful patterns on autopilot or want to make changes in your life that go against what is stored in your subconscious.

Hypnotherapists help you access the subconscious and instill new, more helpful, patterns into the subconscious.

Here are some answers to FAQ’s around what Hypnotherapists do and don’t do:

·  Yes, you are in complete control all the time, you have an awareness of what is going on and can come out of trance at any time if you choose.

·  No, a Hypnotherapist can NOT make you do anything you don’t want to do. Hypnotherapy only works when the client desires the change.

·  Trance kind of feels like that state between being awake and asleep.

·  No, not everyone can be hypnotised, it is estimated about 20% of the population can not be hypnotised.

·  Hypnotherapy sessions differ in length depending on what the client is working on.

·  Yes, hypnotherapy works online.

·  The number of sessions you might need really depends on the client.
